I found this pattern, called Alladorf 60 Hexes, on Piglet's Potholder site. The pattern is based on a type of medieval fabric called Habengewebe (translation from German: honeycomb fabric).

The fabric was woven by German Frankish monks in the 8th century. So, we're talking over one thousand years ago!

I used dark navy loops for the honeycomb outline, burgundy heathered loops for the medium shade, and winter white. I made it on a 19-peg loom.

On the loom. (My cat Orion lay down next to the loom as I was about to take a picture.)

Off the loom:

UPDATE: I like this pattern and thought I'd try it with other colors: heathered green loops, pine, and winter white. The potholders are thick and squishy.
