Christmas surprise potholder pattern

I found this pattern, called Open Cross, in the Loop Group section, on the Friendly Loom site. (You can join the Loop Group for free.)

I altered the pattern a bit by making the middle of the potholder a solid color, instead of alternating colors for both warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal).

For a 19-peg loop, the red loops are on pegs 8-12. For a 27-peg loom, the red loops would be on pegs 10-18 (or basically the cross part of the pattern).

What's the surprise? After I made the potholder, I turned it over and discovered another intriguing pattern on the other side.
